I am looking to form a band in a non-traditional manner; using the internet as our practice studio. Over the last several years, latency issues (lag) have been nearly eliminated so that virtual practice and performance are now possible. Using internet technology offers the following playing benefits:
* No centralized physical studio or space issues.
* Practice from the comfort of your own home and/or surroundings. No time wasted driving or traveling to a central location.
* Keep your rig intact; no setup or breakdown before or after practice.
* Better control of your playing environment, and full access to your musical tools as needed.
As for band member management:
* Band recruitment does not require as much effort.
* Potential band members can be screened much faster.
* Time management is simpler in that schedules can be easily changed or accommodated.
* Members can be easily substituted should performance dates or other issues arise.
* Easier dissemination of musical information (song list, cheat sheets, etc.)
But there are some downsides:
* You need a stable internet connection with at least 10-25 Mbps upload speed and 100+ Mbps download. These speeds are more expensive.
* To achieve low latency (under 25ms), you must use a WIRED ETHERNET CONNECTION (not wireless) to your router.
* You must use an analog to digital converter with at least two inputs (instrument and voice).
* You must have descent set of headphones (can not use speakers due to feedback).
* You should have a camera attached to the computer.
* We must all agree to use the same software (like Jamulus, JamKazam, FarPlay, or LuteFish).
It generally doesn't matter if you are pC or Apple based.
What this all means is that you can participate in the band whether you are in Fresno, Bakerfield, etc. The only time we actually meet is for a dry rehearsal or performance.
