Watch for overposting mechanics on Craigslist services. Watch for mechanics who change their business names over and over.
Watch for desperate mechanics who try and sell you a song and dance with how "honest" they are in their ads.
Protect yourself and watch for key words like "we are the best", "best in town", "cheap" "honest" and "number one".
And if they are licensed, run their name and license. It's incredibly easy (scary easy) to become licensed/ certified in California. It also doesn't mean they are worth anything. Don't believe me? Call the State and ask. They'll give you the dish on why it's easy to scam people. They'll also be happy to explain who the requirements are for. Know the difference between a shop (where requirements are strict) and an independent mechanic (where the requirements are not).
And if you have been scammed, let people know who scammed you.

And be wary of mechanics who ask for money for parts. Many get discounts for parts but will charge you full price and pocket the profit.

When in doubt, trust a well known repair shop in your town. You'll be covered.
