Project SMART (Student Mentoring and Responsibility Team) provides one-to-one mentoring relationships to at-risk children in the Clovis Unified School District. We are currently in need of sport-oriented volunteers to work with at-risk boys in grades 4th-8th. The goals of our program are to assist children in receiving support and guidance from a mentor, improving academic achievement, interpersonal relationships with peers, teachers, other adults, and family members, to reduce their rate of dropping out of school, and to reduce levels of juvenile delinquency and involvement in gangs. Research indicates that the single most important factor in keeping a student in school is the presence of a caring adult. Coach mentors spend one hour each week with the student engaging them in sport activities that include, but are not limited to, football, baseball, soccer, frisbee, volleyball, etc. Other activities are encouraged which may include board games, tutoring, reading, talking, etc. The most important aspect of being a coach mentor is developing a positive relationship with the student that is encouraging and supportive.
Coach mentors must volunteer one hour each week during regular school hours, between 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Mentors must maintain this commitment for one year. Mentors must be at least 18 years old and be able to pass a background and fingerprinting clearance which is administered through the district free of charge. Please contact Dianne Condley, Mentoring Coordinator, for more information: (559) 327-1997, diannecondley@cusd.com.
