This set of rubbings was produced from the original engravings at the temple Wat Pho which was built in the 17th century. Wat Po is the largest temple in Bangkok and is best known for the huge gold Reclining Buddha. The engravings depict the history of Siam, or Thailand, and were saved and installed at Wat Pho in 1796 by King Rama I. They came from an even older temple that had been destroyed by invading Burmese armies in 1767 and the story, or Epic, that they depict is known as the Ramakien which is also the Thai version of the Ramayana, the holy revered text of Hindus.
As students begin making the rubbings they are also learning intimately the history of their culture. They will start out producing monochromatic rubbings at first, usually black but you will also see a variety of colors from red, green, blue, orange and others. As students perfect their techniques of rubbing they will generally progress to multiple colors…. Some are odd combinations but the better artists among them will produce sets of very striking rubbings. In the set, which I purchased in 1970 at Wat Pho, you see the King of Siam, Phra Ram, calling a council of war, the Queen, Benyagai discussing the situation with her mother, Dreechada, and two sets of entertaining minstrels all done in matching three-color renditions of orange, black and green.
When I returned to the States it was a few years before I had these properly mounted. The framing is exquisitely done in a reddish-brown simulated bamboo frame and triple matted in green or black, orange and to pick up the colors of the rubbings, with the top layer a fine grained white rice paper that matches very well with the Mulberry paper of the rubbings. The set is extraordinary and deserves a beautiful setting. They will enhance any oriental setting. The frames measure approx. 25 x 25 and 27 x 25.
